Today (10th August 2022) McCarthy Marland Ltd is pleased to announced the acquisition of Hughes and Salvidge Holdings Ltd, owner of Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd, in a multi-million-pound deal. The acquisition further signals McCarthy Marland’s expansion plans across the South West and beyond.

The move will see McCarthy Marland more than double its turnover to over £18 million and enable it to increase the amount of waste it handles as well as its recycling percentages and sustainability.

The purchase of Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd, based in Wantage in Oxfordshire and Tetbury in Gloucestershire respectively, will further expand McCarthy Marland’s geographical reach across the M4 and M5 corridors.

Acquiring both businesses will mean the number of staff on the McCarthy Marland workforce will also rise by over 60% to 130 employees. The existing leadership teams of both Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd will remain in place.

The takeover represents a significant milestone for the Bristol-based waste management company, having already strengthened its presence in the region after acquiring Westcombe Waste Ltd in 2017.

The combined group now handles c145,000 tonnes of waste per annum of which 75% is recycled or recovered for energy from waste.

Alex Marland, director of McCarthy Marland, said: “The acquisition of both Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd represents a significant step forward in McCarthy Marland’s journey. These are exciting times as we enhance and expand our offering across the region, strengthen our position within the waste management sector and accelerate our overall growth.

“As we more than double our headcount, we are confident we will go from strength to strength with this geographical expansion and drive further efficiency from our combined waste recycling technologies.”

McCarthy Marland now runs waste collection services and recycling facilities across; Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Its subsidiary company, Westcombe Waste Ltd, also operates a landfill site in Somerton. This double acquisition will enable McCarthy Marland to improve operational efficiencies across the breadth of the organisation and greatly increase the amount of recyclable materials it can extract.

Already prominent in the region, McCarthy Marland’s customers include local authorities, companies in the manufacturing, construction, warehousing / distribution industries as well as high street retailers and organisers of major events.

Kevin McCarthy, founder and director of McCarthy Marland, added: “We are proud of the reputation that McCarthy Marland has built up over the years as a leading independent waste management company, which our growing number of customers can trust.

“We have a valuable role to play in helping the UK to respond to today’s net zero carbon challenge. This acquisition will enable us to greatly enhance the extraction of recyclable material from the waste we handle and provide the ability for our clients to effectively track it from an ESG perspective.” Shawbrook Bank has supported the refinancing of McCarthy Marland to allow acquisition.
