On November the 1st 2023 we are looking forward to launching our new branding across 3 of our sites; Somerton in Somerset, Albert Quay in Bristol and Tetbury in Gloucestershire.
Valley Trading will be rebranding as McCarthy Marland on the 1st of November. However, this change will not impact the regular operations of the company, which will continue as usual.

Since then we have jumped from strength to strength as an expanding company. McCarthy Marland makes a further strategic acquisition
Today (10th August 2022) McCarthy Marland Ltd is pleased to announced the acquisition of Hughes and Salvidge Holdings Ltd, owner of Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd, in a multi-million-pound deal. The acquisition further signals McCarthy Marland’s expansion plans across the South West and beyond.
The move will see McCarthy Marland more than double its turnover to over £18 million and enable it to increase the amount of waste it handles as well as its recycling percentages and sustainability.
The purchase of Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd, based in Wantage in Oxfordshire and Tetbury in Gloucestershire respectively, will further expand McCarthy Marland’s geographical reach across the M4 and M5 corridors.
Acquiring both businesses will mean the number of staff on the McCarthy Marland workforce will also rise by over 60% to 130 employees. The existing leadership teams of both Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd will remain in place.
The takeover represents a significant milestone for the Bristol-based waste management company, having already strengthened its presence in the region after acquiring Westcombe Waste Ltd in 2017.
The combined group now handles c145,000 tonnes of waste per annum of which 75% is recycled or recovered for energy from waste.
Alex Marland, director of McCarthy Marland, said: “The acquisition of both Aasvogel Skip Hire Ltd and Valley Trading Ltd represents a significant step forward in McCarthy Marland’s journey. These are exciting times as we enhance and expand our offering across the region, strengthen our position within the waste management sector and accelerate our overall growth.
“As we more than double our headcount, we are confident we will go from strength to strength with this geographical expansion and drive further efficiency from our combined waste recycling technologies.”
McCarthy Marland now runs waste collection services and recycling facilities across; Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Its subsidiary company, Westcombe Waste Ltd, also operates a landfill site in Somerton. This double acquisition will enable McCarthy Marland to improve operational efficiencies across the breadth of the organisation and greatly increase the amount of recyclable materials it can extract.
Already prominent in the region, McCarthy Marland’s customers include local authorities, companies in the manufacturing, construction, warehousing / distribution industries as well as high street retailers and organisers of major events.
Kevin McCarthy, founder and director of McCarthy Marland, added: “We are proud of the reputation that McCarthy Marland has built up over the years as a leading independent waste management company, which our growing number of customers can trust.
“We have a valuable role to play in helping the UK to respond to today’s net zero carbon challenge. This acquisition will enable us to greatly enhance the extraction of recyclable material from the waste we handle and provide the ability for our clients to effectively track it from an ESG perspective.” Shawbrook Bank has supported the refinancing of McCarthy Marland to allow acquisition.
McCarthy Marland choses Purgo
“We use Getac tablets on the trade waste rounds and Samsung devices for everything else.
The software usability is key to getting the drivers to adopt it and it is very intuitive.”
In 2019, Bristol-based waste management company, McCarthy Marland chose to implement PurGo waste management software from VWS Software Solutions. The independent waste operator provides skip hire, roll-on roll-off, grab hire, wheelie bins and other waste management services to Bristol, Bath, south Gloucestershire and Somerset and makes resourceful use of waste materials to produce recycled products and renewable fuels.
Making the decision to move away from their previous system, Director, Alex Marland explains that “we were looking for a full end-to-end solution that could be managed internally, offer real time information, able to integrate with other business systems and be used throughout our operation – from drivers to the accounts team.” The business was also keen to choose a system that was built to grow with them, as their requirements evolve. New flare installed at Somerton landfill
Further investment at our Somerton site in May 2021 saw the install of a new gas flare which burns around 58Cu M/ hr of gas removed from the landfill. It can be remotely controlled and monitored with regular reports being sent to the site managers phone. The next phase is to investigate gas to energy technologies so that we can capture and harvest the energies produced in this process.
